Iranian shrimp for export

Recent trouble getting its shrimp over Vietnamese borders has Iran working out a way to export straight to China, the Azerbaijan-based news agency Trend reports.

“We are in talks with relevant authorities to export potted shrimp to China and we plan to do this directly,” Hassan Ahmadi Jazani, the deputy head of Iran’s Seafood Exporters Union, reportedly told the news agency on Monday.

Iran produced 20,000 metric tons of shrimp during the previous Iranian year (March 21, 2017 to March 20, 2018) and is expected to reach 30,000t in the current Iranian year. China used to purchase 70% of the country’s shrimp, Jazani reportedly said.

The Iran shrimp industry is simultaneously experiencing banking difficulties in relation to its exports to the United Arab Emirate, Trend reports.

Regardless, Iran exported more than 82,450t of seafood worth $283 million, including shrimp, during a nine month period ended Dec. 21, 2017, registering a 23% growth in weight and 37% growth in value over the same period a year earlier, according to Trend.
