Characteristics

  • Body strongly compressed and deep.
  • Head profile very steep in adults.
  • Gillrakers (including rudiments) 31 to 37 total on first gill arch.
  • Lobe of second dorsal fin elongate and filamentous, longer than head length.
  • Dorsal fin sexually dimorphic, in mature males, 3 to 12 of the central rays produced into filaments of greatly varying lengths.
  • Bluish grey above, silvery below; blackish blotch on upper margin of opercle.
  • Maximum size: 50 cm (fork length)

Distribution

Around the Strait of Hormuz and probably in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman
