Characteristics

  • Body strongly compressed; dorsal profile more convex than ventral profile.
  • Lower jaw becoming prominent in large adults, with the angle of “chin” projecting beyond upper jaw.
  • Gillrakers (including rudiments) 23 to27 upper, 51 to 61 lower and 74 to 86 total on first gill arch.
  • Gillrakers extremely long, and project into mouth along sides of tongue.
  • In life, head and body blue green
  • Dorsally; silvery below
  • Maximum size 85 cm.

Distribution

The Persian Gulf and the west part of the Sea of Oman.
