  • Body elongate.
  • Lower jaw greatly prolonged, beak-like.
  • Upper jaw short, triangular and scale less.
  • Total number of gillrakers on first gill arch 25 to 32.
  • Pectoral fins short, not reaching past nasal pit when folded forward.
  • Color dark bluish above; silvery white below; beak dark with a bright red fleshy tip.
  • Maximum size: about 34 cm.
