Characteristics

  • Body oblong, compressed; dorsal profile strongly convex to second dorsal fin.
  • Gillrakers (including rudiments) 5 to 7 upper, 15 to 17 lower and 20 to 24 total on first gill arch.
  • Breast naked ventrally, typically with a small patch of pre pelvic scales.
  • In life, adults with head and body silvery grey to black above, usually paler below; fins usually uniformly pigmented grey to black, except leading edge and tips of dorsal and anal fin lobes paler.
  • Maximum size: 24 cm (fork length)
