Characteristics

  • Body elongate and sub cylindrical.
  • Head broad and depressed, mouth large.
  • First dorsal fin with 7 to 9 (usually 8) short strong isolated spines, not connected by a membrane.
  • Caudal fin lunate in adults, upper lobe longer than lower; rounded in young.
  • Scales small, embedded in thick skin.
  • Back and sides dark brown; with 2 sharply defined narrow light bands; belly yellowish.
  • Maximum size: 200 cm.

Distribution

The Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.
