  • Body elongate and tubular.
  • Several rows of teeth visible in both jaws even when mouth is closed.
  • Vomer usually toothless.
  • Pectoral fins long and pointed.
  • Longest dorsal ray 3.5 times as long as last ray.
  • Back and sides brown; belly pale or silvery.
  • Second dorsal fin ray and upper caudal fin ray with a series of about 8 dark spots.
  • Maximum size: exceeds 45 cm total length.
