Characteristics

  • Body elongate and moderately shallow and slightly compressed.
  • Upper jaw broadly rounded at end, extending to below posterior margin of eye.
  • Gillrakers on first arch mostly consisting of rudiments, 4 to 10 total elements.
  • No scutes; caudal peduncle grooves present.
  • Head and body bluish – grey to black dorsally; young with 5 to 7 dark oblique bands and blotches on upper body that fade with age; spinous dorsal fin black.
  • Maximum size: 70 cm (total length).

Distribution

The Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.
