  • Body elongate and compressed.
  • Body depth 2.9 to 3 times in standard length.
  • Dorsal fin 12 spines and 14 soft rays.
  • Teeth in jaws in villi form bands, the outer series enlarged.
  • Chin with 2 pores but no median pit.
  • Color of body purplish brown above; paler below, with about 6 longitudinal laterally stripes that may be bifurcate anteriorly.
  • Maximum size: 38 cm.
